Ocean Plastics

Client: The Ocean Plastic Innovation Challenge

Completed: 2019

For this project, we explored the scourge of ocean plastic pollution through the data of a recent scientific expedition through the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a massive collection of human-made particles floating in the Pacific Ocean. Our visualization, which we submitted to a National Geographic competition, showed data about the debris samples the scientists took over several months and across hundreds of miles of ocean. To accurately represent the number of particles they collected each day, we embraced the technical challenge of animating over 100,000 particles in the browser.
